Solace

herbs and essences for highly sensitive people

🌻

Have you ever sensed that you're feeling everything on a much deeper level than your peers?

For highly sensitive people, it can feel like the volume of the world is turned up to 100 while everyone else is experiencing life at much quieter levels. It took me a while to figure out how heightened sensitivity was affecting my life, but some years back I realized that many of the folks I was serving in my private practice, the ones who were turning up to my classes, and those who were reading my blog posts came from diverse backgrounds but were united by a common thread: they were deeply sensitive souls and empaths who often felt out-of-step with a demanding and increasingly noisy world. And so I set out to create an even more welcoming space for these folks, discovering along the way that I was highly sensitive, too, and having to face my own inner critic and the cultural narratives of negativity surrounding sensitivity.

I realized that a course like Solace was needed to support highly sensitive people, empaths, and those who experience heightened sensitivity from things like from sensory disorders, neurodiversities, and more. Too many of these highly sensitive folks, myself included, were over-relying on stretched-thin coping mechanisms and not enough tools to help them thrive, including learning how to reach out for others for support. And, well, why would we ask for support when so many of us are trying to prove that we're not highly sensitive because we were raised in families or cultures which saw our sensitivity as a liability and not a gift.

So I started to look through my notes, study the research on sensitivity and writings by other sensitive folks, as well as work with my beloved plant allies, to create a resource that would help highly sensitive people embrace their sensitivity for the gift it is - and so Solace was created.

solace is a space to experiment with the radical idea that your

sensitivity has never been "too much" -

but that the space you deserve to flourish and grow into

your sensitivity has been too little.

It's estimated that around 15% - 20% of the population are highly sensitive, meaning that they experience a heightened sense of their surroundings and have a nervous system which processes experiences more deeply. If you answer yes to most of the following questions, you might be highly sensitive too.

  • Do you seem to perceive the world around you with greater depth than your peers?
  • Are you more easily run down than your peers in noisy environments or social situations, even if you enjoy being there?
  • Were you called "too sensitive" as a child and expected to toughen up and alter your behavior?
  • Do you have this expansive inner world and complex imagination?
  • Do you feel like a raw nerve, experiencing everyone else's emotions before you're able to find your own?
  • Do you feel like you're on a constant cycle of burnout and recovery?
  • Are you more easily overwhelmed by sensory input that other folks seem not to notice like bright lights, strong smells, certain textures or intense interactions?
  • Do you find yourself needing to withdraw to quiet dark spaces in order to recover from seemingly "normal" experiences?

If you answered yes to most or all of these questions you might be a highly sensitive person - Solace was created for you.

I'm Alexis J. Cunningfolk (she/they) and I love serving highly sensitive people in my intersectional herbal practice. It took a little while (because we live in a world that doesn't always name much less value sensitivity) but soon I realized that I was highly sensitive as well and I wanted to create a course that helps sensitive folks grow and thrive in their sensitivity. I believe that now more than ever we need to embrace our sensitivity during these times of churn and change.

My work is rooted not only my own experience of high sensitivity but in my lived experience as a nonbinary lesbian, a mixed-race womxn, and a practicing Witch. And as an herbalist, I teach the full spectrum of traditional western herbalism - from its magickal roots to its modern breakthroughs. Through my work and lived experience I've come to see my sensitivity and the sensitivity of others as a beautiful gift that needs to be nurtured and celebrated - which is why I've created Solace!

a course for highly sensitive people and the folks who love them

As we live through these times of churn and change, increased hyper-connectivity, and deep cultural shifts and schisms, there can be a tendency to rely on coping more and trying to stay inflexibly tough in the face of challenges. Yet, as we explore in Solace, we need to nurture and celebrate sensitivity more than ever as a way to build more sustainable movements of justice, environmental care, and interpersonal repair.

Solace is a space of slowing down, checking in, and finding a path to joyful resiliency as a sensitive person.

Popular culture has pushed messages of overwork, highly individual success, and shaming those who just didn't hustle hard enough. All of these messages lead to a similar place: conforming into unrealistic standards of production, rewarding unwavering grit that wears us down, and tying self-worth to how much you can do without stopping. Such a culture harms everyone and especially shames the more sensitively-wired who inherently require a different pace and way of being in order to live enriching lives.

This course is for:

  • Folks who are just learning about their sensitivity and want to learn more with a focus on herbal and healing practices.
  • Those who have known about their sensitivity for a while but are looking for tools to help them feel more resilient in their life.
  • Empaths who are exhausted by the emotional noisiness of the world.
  • Herbalists and fellow holistic practitioners who serve sensitive folks and want to be able to serve them even better.

Working with simple healing practices, self-inquiry, and our beloved plant allies, in Solace we'll explore what it is that makes our sensitivity a vital part of ourselves and how to create a network of care that meets our individual and collective needs as sensitive people.

My goal with Solace is to help you move from a place of coping day-to-day with your sensitivity to learning sustainable resiliency practices to help you thrive.

The Details

Solace is a completely self-guided, self-paced course blissfully free of the distractions and pressures of social groups, schedules, or study deadlines. The course is writing-based (all lessons are downloadable as PDFs and audio recordings) and structured into:

Finally, we'll learn about the wide array of plant allies in the form of herbs and flower essences which can support us in our practice of becoming more attune with our sensitive needs, taking care of our nervous system, and creating an internal and external environment that helps us to live a more joyful and peaceful life.

Creating Access
or how to pay for the course

In the spirit of financial accessibility, Solace is offered at a sliding scale (if you are unfamiliar with the sliding scale and where you might fall on it be sure to read my quick guide below before purchase). You can purchase Solace for as little as $21 and there are also opportunities to pay a bit more and support the lower tiers of enrollment.

While I encourage you to read my full thoughts on the sliding scale here is a very brief rundown:

Standard Membership at $36 is the actual cost of the class. If you choose a ticket price below this tier you are receiving a discount.

Supported Membership at $21 is for those who are able to meet their basic needs but have little-to-no expendable income. Paying for this class may qualify as a sacrifice but it would not create hardship.

The Pay-It-Forward price is $40 - a few dollars above the actual cost of the class. That extra money goes towards supporting the lower tier of the sliding scale, scholarships, and future free and low-cost classes. Essentially it's an opportunity to not only take your class but also support your fellow community members while you're at it. Sweet!

Two times a year (when I offer extended payment plans for my other courses - see FAQ) I offer an Extra Support Membership for $12. This level is for those who struggle to meet basic needs and paying for this class is possible at this level, but still a hardship.
